Control Joint Cracks

The addition of control joints to your concrete slab may be necessary to reduce any further cracking in your concrete slab if there were no joints in the original construction. These joints control how and where a shrinkage crack emerges in a slab. They also allow for temperature contraction or expansion without any additional damage to the slab. If a slab does not have these control joints, cracks can start appearing in floors, walls or even ceilings in uneven or diagonal patterns in places where they may cause faults such as cracks in tiles or other flooring.

Standards

Although there are few accepted standards in the construction of concrete slabs for cracking. However, it is recommended that cracks in your basement floors which are larger that 3/16” in width and 1/8” in vertical displacement should definitely be repaired. The same standard states that cracks occurring in control joints in the concrete slabs are normal and accepted. Although that is stated, we suggest that any and all cracks should be seen to and repaired before any further damage is caused to your flooring, floor tiles, wall tiles and even your ceilings.
